The Honourable Judy Spence

Top crime fighters recognised for years serving the Queensland public

Some of Queensland’s most experienced police officers have been recognised today, for their years of service and dedication to protecting Queensland communities.

Police Minister Judy Spence and Commissioner Bob Atkinson, presented medals and clasps for diligent and ethical service to 70 Queensland police officers and civilian staff members, who have served the people of Queensland for up to 40 years.

Ms Spence said: “These medal recipients represent the wealth of knowledge within our police service – with a total of more than 1100 years experience with the QPS between them.

“In today’s society, where people regularly move from one career to the next, this is a great commitment – and we thank these individuals for their loyalty and dedication to the people of Queensland.”

Commissioner Bob Atkinson said: “The work conducted by 70 of our police officers and staff members being recognised here today is demonstrative of the diligence of our people, and further shows our strong commitment to serving and protecting the community.

“The officers and staff members come from an array of different areas including units of State Crime Operations Command, Ethical Standards Command, Operations Support Command, Human Resources Division, Information and Communications Technology, Media and Public Affairs Branch, and the Office of the Commissioner.

“The work responsibilities of the recipients include such diverse duties as intelligence, forensic services, criminal investigations, and general duties as well as strategic management and corporate support.

“This is a showcase of the range of skills and attributes our staff and officers employ on a daily basis, and reflect creditably on the professionalism of the Service,” Commissioner Atkinson said.

During the ceremony at Police Headquarters, Minister Spence also presented Commissioner Atkinson with his 40 year clasp to the Queensland Police Medal.

“The Queensland Police Medal is awarded to members of the police service who have demonstrated diligent and professional service for ten years, with clasps for every 5 years thereafter,” Ms Spence said.

“Bob Atkinson exemplifies these qualities, and to describe his service as diligent and professional is an understatement.

“Commissioner Atkinson has dedicated his adult life to protecting and serving the people of this state.

“He is a man of great integrity and honour, whose leadership has seen the Queensland Police Service continue to grow into one of the best police services in the world.

“The Queensland Police Service is in excellent hands with Commissioner Atkinson at the helm and his outstanding years of service are an inspiration to both his long serving colleagues and new recruits.”
