Weak Liberals sell out the environment

The Queensland Liberals have abandoned the environment to the Nationals, paving the way for widespread tree clearing to resume across Queensland.

Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation Minister Andrew McNamara said the two Liberal members who were supposed to attend yesterday’s Budget Estimates hearings, didn’t bother to turn up.

One of the no-shows, Member for Noosa Glenn Elmes, had been granted special permission to sit on the Estimates Committee examining the Environmental Protection Agency budget for 2008/09.

“But he and Tim Nicholls were too busy doing the bidding of their factional bosses to show any interest in climate change or any other of the environmental challenges we face,” Mr McNamara said.

“It was left to the Nationals to represent the Coalition’s policy on the environment, the very people who have vowed to repeal our laws that protect vast areas of Queensland forest.

“The cat’s out of the bag. Under the new conservative party, the Nationals will be running the show when it comes to the environment and it will be back to the days of the dozers.

“I’m calling on the Liberals to tell the people of Queensland. Will you back this environmental crime as the price to pay for the crumbs the Nationals will throw you?”
