JOINT STATEMENT
Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
Premier
The Honourable Anna Bligh
PREMIER OPENS QUEENSLAND ACADEMY FOR CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
Premier Anna Bligh and Education and Training Minister Rod Welford have officially opened the $41 million Queensland Academy for Creative Industries at Kelvin Grove.
The Premier said the academy would give creative young Queenslanders all the tools they needed to pursue careers in one of the 21st century’s growth areas.
“This academy enables Queensland’s highest-performing Year 10, 11 and 12 students to fast-track their learning, heighten their creative potential and experience cutting-edge industries,” Ms Bligh said.
“The students of the Creative Industries Academy have bright futures ahead of them - they are our artists, our multi-media, marketing, advertising and design specialists.
“These students are some of Queensland’s next creative thinkers and entrepreneurs.”
The Premier said the academy’s partnership with Queensland University of Technology allows students to participate in research programs and collaborate with artists, researchers and industry experts, undertake curatorial mentorships and gain credit in a number of QUT courses.
“Students also benefit by working with industry leaders including Apple and Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) – they’re piloting ground-breaking new technology and participating in short courses that will shape them as future artists,” she said.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the academy’s world-class facilities integrated the latest Information Communication Technology and building design developments.
“The campus includes a digital music editing and sound recording studio as well as open plan visual art studios with commercial gallery space,” Mr Welford said.
“The focal point of the academy is the 360-seat performance theatre which is digitally linked to a film production studio with capability for whole-of-academy broadcasting.
“The Creative Industries Academy is part of the Bligh Government’s commitment to providing students with opportunities to help them reach their full potential.”
The Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology at Toowong opened to students in January 2007 and the Queensland Academy for Health Sciences opened in January 2008.
Students entering Year 10 in 2009 have until July 26 to register for the entry test to the Academies. For more information phone 3350 7880 or visit www.qldacademies.eq.edu.au
