Spence encourages Longreach sporting groups to learn from the best
Former Australian Rugby League representative and Brisbane Broncos Coaching and Development Officer Michael De Vere will visit Longreach on Tuesday 22 July 2008 with a team of sports professionals, to share playing, training and coaching tips with local athletes, teachers and clubs.
Sport Minister Judy Spence said the panel also included Indigenous sportswomen Yvonne O’Neil, Sports Dietician Michelle Spillane and Exercise Physiologist Chris Weier.
“Locker Room Forums are about providing people at the grass roots level of sport with some useful tips and information from people who have dedicated their life to sport and coaching,” Ms Spence said.
“Each of the presenters have coached, competed or supported sport at a state, national and international level.
“The forum provides local athletes, coaches, clubs and anyone else with an interest in sports in Longreach with a great opportunity to tap into a wealth of sporting expertise.
“The Locker Room Forum will cover a range of topics including strength, conditioning and recovery sessions; sports success and goal setting; nutrition; the role of the coach; and opportunities for Indigenous athletes in sport.”
Ms Spence said the presenters would discuss the following:
Michael De Vere: Former Brisbane Broncos premiership winning player, NSW State of Origin and Australia Rugby League representative and Brisbane Broncos Coaching and Development Officer, Michael will speak about the link between goal setting and success in sport.
Chris Weier: Exercise Physiologist and lecturer, personal fitness trainer and Australian triathlon representative, Chris will speak about how to set up a strength and conditioning and recovery program to help athletes at all levels of sport.
Michelle Spillane: Sports Dietician and Exercise Physiologist, Michelle will speak on the benefits of nutrition in sport and provide simple and practical strategies that will help empower people to achieve optimal nutrition, health and performance.
Yvonne O’Neil: Indigenous sportswomen, Australian and QLD Women’s Rugby League representative and Coaching Coordinator for QLD Women’s Rugby league, Yvonne will speak about providing opportunities for Indigenous athletes in sport
Ms Spence said since 2001 more than 210 Locker Rooms had been held across the State, attended by more than 10,000 Queenslanders from Coolangatta to the Torres Strait.
The Longreach Locker Room Forum will be held on Tuesday 22 July between 6pm and 9pm at Albert Park Motel, Cnr Ilfracombe & Stork Roads, Longreach. Admission is Free.
