Young people's Cultural Centre space on The Edge of design

The phenomenal success of the Cultural Centre at South Bank is set to continue with the announcement of a design team to deliver The Edge, an interactive space especially for young people.

Arts Minister Rod Welford said Brisbane-based architectural firm m3architecture, with Deicke Richards as supporting consultants, had been selected to develop The Edge at the Cultural Centre as an innovative place for young people where they can explore their ideas and creativity.

“The philosophy of m3architecture, with its focus on collaboration and the creative design process, makes them an ideal firm to take The Edge from a vision to reality,” Mr Welford said.

“The work of the practice has been recognised at both a national and international level, with numerous publications, awards and exhibitions, including representation in the Australian pavilion at the 2006 Venice Architecture Biennale.

“M3architecture will also have the great advantage of benefiting from ideas and concepts developed by a team of young people providing input into the design process.”

Mr Welford said the Queensland Government was investing $7.9 million to develop The Edge, located at the State Library of Queensland, with construction to begin at the end of the year.

“The Edge, scheduled for completion in September 2009, will feature activity spaces, media labs, gathering spaces, work spaces and catering facilities along with accommodation for State Library support staff,” Mr Welford said.

“The Edge will contribute to the Cultural Centre as a landmark destination for cultural and learning activities for all ages.

“Activities at the Edge will build upon the Cultural Centre’s exclusive exhibitions, imaginative children’s programming, internationally acclaimed performers and access to the state’s best heritage and learning facilities.”

Abigroup is the managing contractor for The Edge development with Project Services, a commercialised business unit of the Department of Public Works as project manager.

The Edge is the centre piece of arts culture + me, the Bligh Government’s action plan for children and young people in the arts, launched in April.
