Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Golden age: Seniors Week reaches Olympic proportions
Communities and Seniors Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said Aussie athletes won’t be the only ones going for gold this August as Queenslanders are warming up for an action-packed Seniors Week.
“From the indoor games challenge in Tara, to a rubber duckie race in Mossman, there will be activities all around the State in Seniors Week from August 23 to 31,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“A highlight will undoubtedly be the hugely-popular Fun Day and Expo at South Bank Parklands on Sunday, August 17th,” she said.
“With a strong focus on active ageing – and in the spirit of the Olympics – the day literally kicks off with a chance to break some records in the 2.5km and 5km fun walks.
“There’s also hourly Tai Chi and easy exercise sessions, as well as some Salsa, Samba and tap dancing.”
Radiating out from Suncorp Piazza, entertainment will feature up-and-coming jazz singer Elly Hoyt and the Queensland Youth Orchestra, Gold Coast’s The Happy Tappers, Liza Beamish and Lachlan Baker, ‘Woman of Rock’ Carol Lloyd and the ‘Women in Voice Orchestra’, as well as finalists from the 2008 Seniors Superstars.
There’s also a free sausage sizzle and a Seniors Card expo showcasing products and services offered by businesses in the Queensland Government’s statewide Business Discount Scheme for seniors.
“I warmly welcome Queensland’s seniors to join in the fun and take advantage of the free activities and events in their local areas,” said the Minister.
“Seniors Week is a time for people of all ages to come together and promote positive attitudes towards ageing as well as foster friendships between generations.
“Queenslanders of all ages deserve to be recognised for their hard work, experience and knowledge –with our seniors at the top of the list because they have built the foundations of modern Queensland.”
