Drought declarations lifted in Boonah

The benefits of summer rain continue to be felt across parts of Queensland with another drought revocation.

Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Tim Mulherin said after almost six years of having official drought status the former Shire of Boonah was no longer drought declared.

“This follows the most recent meeting of the Local Drought Committee for the Scenic Rim Regional Council, and significant rainfall in January-February this year with more follow up rain in June,” he said.

“Recent temperatures have been reasonably mild and there are no records of early or severe frost.

The revocations in Divisions 5 and 6 of the Scenic Rim Regional Council are effective as at June 30, 2008.

“Despite a number of recent revocations, 54.3 per cent of the land area of Queensland remains drought declared.”

The seasonal outlook, according to information from the Queensland Climate Change Centre of Excellence, is for a 50 to 70 percent chance of getting median rainfall throughout most of Queensland during July to September. The exception is for the central north of the state where there is a lower 30 to 50 percent chance of getting median rainfall.

Eligible primary producers who have had their drought declaration revoked will have access to freight subsidy assistance for restocking and returning livestock from agistment during the recovery phase.

Producers who believe they have not received adequate rainfall to alleviate drought conditions can contact the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries to discuss eligibility for an Individually Droughted Property declaration to continue accessing freight subsidies on the transport of fodder and water for livestock.

Individual drought declared properties have the same access to assistance as those in a declared region.
