Teens encouraged to be bold and think big
Sunshine Coast teens will be encouraged to enter the exciting and innovative industries of ICT and high tech manufacturing at a Careers’ Expo at Tanawha on Thursday (July 17).
Minister for Regional Development and Industry Desley Boyle said the Queensland Government stand will give young people the chance to learn about the job prospects from emerging industries like ICT and manufacturing.
“The ICT and high tech manufacturing industries are sectors where you can be bold and think big,” Ms Boyle said.
“From developing world famous computer games to building racing cars, helicopters and mega-yachts, these are the types of jobs that can come from working in these industries.
“It’s also an area where we need more skilled workers.
“I’m encouraging those attending to come and talk to people already working in our ICT and manufacturing industries and find out what the jobs are really like.
“We’ve got ICT industry professionals from top-name companies Mincom, a world leader in mining software development, and Data 3, a national ICT solutions company.”
This year a new magazine called ‘Careers in ICT’ will showcase the broad range of career opportunities available, ranging from government to small and large business.
Up for grabs is a $2000 bursary per expo which can be used at James Cook University, University of South Queensland, Griffith University, Queensland University Technology and University of Queensland.
IT Training Solutions (ITTS) an industry leader in technology-training solutions will advise on IT education and give two lucky winners $700 education training vouchers.
Ms Boyle said the manufacturing display would feature practical information on how to start an apprenticeship.
New slogans for the State Government’s manufacturing campaign Create it Make it Live it sum up what manufacturing can offer young people – Manufacturing: Great Careers, Great Prospects and Manufacturing: Careers that Really Pay.

Both stands will be on display at: the Careers Expo, Kings Champion Centre, Tanawha, 9am – 4pm, 17 July.
The manufacturing display will also appear at the SunSkills Expo 2008 being held at the Sunshine Coast TAFE, Mooloolaba Campus, Lady Musgrave Drive, Mountain Creek and the Sunshine Coast TAFE, Nambour Campus, Windsor Road.
