The Honourable Judy Spence
Spence announces $3.5 million for Queenslanders to get healthy and active
Community groups, sporting organisations, educational institutions and local governments could soon share in $3.5 million funding to deliver projects that help Queenslanders lead more active and healthy lives.
Sport Minister Judy Spence today launched the Eat Well Be Active Community Partnerships Program 2008, encouraging all eligible organisations to apply for funding grants of up to $50,000.
“This Program supports projects at the local level to help Queenslanders to adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle,” Ms Spence said.
“Over 115 projects received more than $2.7 million funding under the Community Partnerships Program last year, covering the areas of nutrition, physical activity, sport, recreation and healthy lifestyle choices.
Projects included:
• The Royal Flying Doctors Service delivered a nutritional awareness program in Far North Queensland, for which we provided $50,000. The program educated the community about healthy diet options using bush food, through visits to local schools and the production of a training DVD.
• Queensland Association of School Tuckshops developed an information package on healthy food and drink options for children at local pools, swimming clubs and learn to swim venues, for which we provided $33,840.
• Pine Rivers Shire Council used their $17,667 towards increasing physical activity amongst community members by providing pedometers and play equipment kits for loan from local libraries. The Council also focused on nutrition as part of their campaign, conducting healthy eating workshops for family day care providers in the region.
“The Community Partnerships Program is all about providing funding at the grassroots level to support the development and delivery of healthy lifestyle programs.
“This program further supports the Government’s Find Your 30 campaign, which also aims to get Queenslanders to eat well and be active by finding 30 minutes for physical activity each day and choosing healthy food.
“The State Government is committed to improving sport and recreation opportunities for all Queenslanders.
“I encourage all eligible Queensland organisations to submit their application for funding under the Eat Well Be Active Community Partnerships Program,” Ms Spence said.
Funding applications close on 30 October 2008. Further information and application forms are available at www.sportrec.qld.gov.au.
