Record baby capsule fittings for newborn Queenslanders

The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) is responding to the State's increased birth rate with a record 13,400 baby capsules hired and fitted last financial year, Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said today.

Mr Roberts said the QAS hired and fitted 13,434 baby capsules – the equivalent of almost 37 baby capsules each day - in 2007-08.

"QAS hired and fitted an extra 899 baby capsules last financial year compared to the 12,535 in 2006-07," Mr Roberts said.

Mr Roberts said QAS's baby capsule hire service was catering for almost one in four newborns in Queensland.*

"By hiring a baby capsule with the Queensland Ambulance Service, parents can be assured trained and experienced fitters will install the baby capsule so that the baby can travel safely," Mr Roberts said.

"Baby capsules can be installed approximately two weeks prior to the baby's due date, however fitting appointments will need to be arranged four to six weeks ahead."

Mr Roberts said late last year, the QAS reached the milestone of fitting its 100,000th baby capsule.

Research has indicated that up to 70% of child restraints are installed incorrectly, leaving children vulnerable to serious injury if they are involved in an accident.

Mr Roberts said parents and carers should be vigilant providing the correct restraints for their child as they grow.

"It is critical for the safety of their children that restraints and straps are checked regularly, ensuring that straps are properly adjusted to suit the child for every trip," he said.

The current cost of a six-month baby capsule hire is $68.10 (or the equivalent of $2.60 per week). The cost also covers all accessories required to fit the capsules.

*In 2006, the number of registered births in Queensland was 52,665.
