Minister announces Short Film Competition top 10

Arts Minister Rod Welford today announced the 10 local films short-listed for the inaugural The Courier-Mail Queensland Short Film Competition, as part of the St.George Bank Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF).

Mr Welford said the competition recognised the creative talents of Queensland short film makers.

The short-listed films are – The Sound of Cry; Dog With Electric Collar; Joonba; The Prams; Nine Miles Beautiful; Up the White Eyes; Seize the Day; The Weight of Sunken Treasure; and Dan and Burley!.

“There has been a very positive response in the first year of The Courier-Mail Queensland Short Film Competition, and the quality of entries received was exceptional,” Mr Welford said.

“Each of the short-listed films will be shown at least twice during the festival and all 10 will screen at a special presentation at The Regent Cinema on Saturday 9 August.

“The films will also appear throughout the main BIFF program ahead of featured screenings – a wonderful chance for emerging filmmakers to have their work seen by packed audiences.”

Mr Welford said the finalists would vie for two major prizes, with winners to be announced at the closing night of the Festival on Sunday 10 August.

The Critics Choice, with a $5,000 cash prize, will be chosen by a panel of film and media experts, including The Courier-Mail’s Des Partridge, NOVA 106.9FM breakfast presenter Meshel Laurie and Australian actors Rebecca Frith and Matthew Newton.

The Audience Favourite will be nominated online and by SMS voting and the winning filmmaker will win an Apple MAC Book Pro valued at $3,500.

Last year’s winner of the Queensland New Filmmakers Award Audience Favourite was locally-produced hit Unfinished Sky. The film has since received critical acclaim and impressive box office results at theatres around Australia.

Tickets for The Courier-Mail Queensland Short Film Competition Top 10 Screening will be available from Friday 18 July and can be purchased online at www.stgeorgebiff.com.au or at the box office at The Regent.
