Great sport leaders teach business how to retain the best talent

In business or on the sporting field, retaining the best talent is vital and former Brisbane Lions AFL Premiership winners and co-captains Michael Voss and Alastair Lynch know the recipe for success.

They’ll run a workshop at this year’s fourth Annual Skilling Australia Summit to provide organisations with practical solutions for addressing workforce issues.

Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Desley Boyle said the skills workshop, sponsored by the department, was especially topical because record low unemployment meant that businesses would have to start working smarter and more collaboratively to get the best workers.

“While almost every business is struggling to recruit, train and retain staff in an incredibly tight skills and labour market, there are ways businesses can be successful,” Ms Boyle said.

“Participants will get details of strategies that other businesses have implemented to make them successful through better recruitment and staff retention.

“Michael and Alastair will give examples of how the Brisbane Lions became triple premiership holders by developing highly talented individuals into a cohesive team.”

Ms Boyle added the workshop would bring together a number of leading industry representatives to share their experiences and expertise on using networks to address their workforce challenges.

“Participants will be guided through a highly interactive workshop session that will challenge them to think about what their organisation is doing and how it fits within the skilling environment,” Ms Boyle said.

“Then using the examples given by our panel, participants will work together to develop practical solutions that could be implemented in their own organisations.

“This could be the solution to their workforce problems they’ve been looking for.”

Michael Voss and Alastair Lynch are from Australia Pacific Leadership Group (APLG) a company that offers leadership and organisational development solutions, providing leadership insights from business experience, sporting excellence and academic expertise.

“Workshops like this one help organisations achieve long-term solutions to existing and emerging workforce development and planning issues,” Ms Boyle said.
