Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Extra government funding for new Woorabinda pool
The Woorabinda community in central Queensland will soon be enjoying a new swimming pool thanks to the Bligh Government increasing its funding support for the project.
Local Government Minister Warren Pitt today announced extra funding of up to $1.6 million for the project, bringing the government’s total commitment to $3.1 million.
“The old pool at Woorabinda is past is use-by date and needs to be replaced,” Mr Pitt said.
“This project will result in a new six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, a children’s wading pool and a new ablutions block next to the existing Kangaroo Stadium.
“Woorabinda has a high proportion of people under 18 in its population and these new facilities will provide an excellent outlet for sporting and recreation activities for younger people as well as other residents.
“It will also provide an important social hub for the community, which has now become a ‘dry’ or alcohol-free community.”
Mr Pitt said the funds had been provided through the Department of Local Government’s Rural Living Infrastructure Program and the previous capital works subsidy scheme.
“The department’s funding programs help rural councils to provide the sort of infrastructure that people in larger towns and cities might take for granted,” Mr Pitt said.
“Our rural and Aboriginal councils don’t have the financial resources of larger city or regional councils, so it’s important that the State Government can support important community projects like this one to improve the cultural and recreational opportunities available to Queenslanders.”
