Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
Young Queenslanders seek to outskill interstate rivals
Some of Queensland’s top apprentices and trainees today demonstrated why they were chosen to represent their state in the WorldSkills National Competition in Sydney from 10-14 July.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford farewelled 56 young Queensland apprentices and trainees and wished them good luck in the prestigious event.
“The biennial competition helps to raise the skills standard in 50 industrial trades and service industries from carpentry and plumbing to IT software applications and web design,” Mr Welford said.
“It also helps apprentices and trainees develop personally and professionally.
“It’s a great way for them to display their talents and test their mettle against their peers.
“It also benefits employers because their workers strive to excel in their field, bringing back higher-level skills and knowledge to their workplace.”
Mr Welford said the State Government was pleased to support WorldSkills Australia.
“The Department of Education, Training and the Arts has funded about $700,000 in 2008-09 to co-ordinate Queensland’s WorldSkills and Try’a Trade program to promote youth skills excellence in the trades,” he said.
“And TAFE institutes throughout the State give in-kind assistance, including hosting regional competitions.
“WorldSkills complements the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which includes creating more trades training places to help reduce skills shortages.”
Mr Welford said successful competitors were eligible for selection to represent Australia at the WorldSkills International Competition in Calgary, Canada, next year.
“Last year four Queenslanders made the Australian Skillaroos team and competed in Japan,” he said.
“I’m hoping that after this year’s national competition there will be even more Skillaroos from Queensland stampeding on Calgary.”
Competitors in Queensland’s WorldSkills team are listed by category, training region and home suburb below.
