Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Stage two of the $92 million Bundaberg Ring Road project will start later this month, after the contract was awarded to Bellero Constructions.
Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said Bellero Constructions had been awarded a $19.2 million contract for the work, which will connect the Isis Highway to Goodwood Road.
"The second stage of the project involves the construction of 6.9km of a new 10-metre-wide bitumen sealed road," Mr Pitt said.
"Stage two will also involve a major intersection upgrade at the Isis Highway, along with new intersections at Woodward Road and Price and Crow streets.
"When completed, the 14-kilometre Bundaberg Ring Road will be an alternative route for motorists travelling from the Isis Highway to Bargara Road and other parts of the city."
Mr Pitt said the road was designed to take heavy vehicles out of the Bundaberg central business district and provide better access to coastal areas.
"Bundaberg residents and visitors will find it a convenient way to travel around the city," Mr Pitt said.
"Stage one of construction, the 7.4km section from Bargara Road to Goodwood Road, is expected to be completed by the end of February next year, weather permitting.
"Once completed, the ring road will have five major intersections – four will have traffic lights, and the fifth will have an overpass and traffic lights."
The Bundaberg Ring Road, expected to be completed by the end of 2009, will alleviate traffic on the existing road network and save considerable time for road users.
