Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
Indigenous student to shine in Women in Voice
When annual songfest Women in Voice opens to a packed house tonight third-year Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts (ACPA) student Georgia Corowa will be one of the star performers.
Arts Minister Rod Welford congratulated Georgia, a 24 year-old soul singer from Proserpine, on her debut performance with Women in Voice.
“Georgia is one of the 34 students set to graduate in 2008 from ACPA, the State Government’s unique performing arts training centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island students in South Brisbane,” Mr Welford said.
“For the past three years, Georgia has been completing her Advanced Diploma in the Performing Arts.
“She has developed the singing, dancing and acting skills required for an exciting career both on and behind the stage.
“She has already been a stand-out performer in ACPA’s production Reflections and I’m sure she will impress crowds in Women in Voice.”
Women in Voice is on at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre from 9–12 July, featuring Katie Noonan, Pearly Black, Melissa Western, L’il Fi and Liz Buchanan.
Mr Welford said ACPA delivers Certificate III and IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma training to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island students wanting to pursue a career in the performing arts in a culturally sensitive and supportive environment.
ACPA’s most successful graduate, Leah Purcell, is Resident Artistic Director.
ACPA Chief Executive Officer Milos Miladinovic said the centre was extremely proud of Georgia’s invitation to perform in Women in Voice.
“Georgia’s level of skill and commitment is testament to the vibrant learning experiences that students experience at ACPA,” Mr Miladinovic said.
“ACPA’s mission is to train Indigenous people in the performing arts, developing the next generation of performers that will shape the unique identity of our culture nationally and internationally. Georgia is a shining example of this wave of new performers.”
ACPA is accepting applications for its 2008 Certificate III and IV programs. For more information visit www.acpa.net.au
