Minister welcomes Brazil trade appointment for Sallyanne Atkinson

Minister for Trade John Mickel today welcomed the appointment by the Brazilian Government of former Brisbane Lord Mayor Dr Sallyanne Atkinson AO as Queensland’s Honorary Consul for Brazil.

“As a former Trade Queensland Special Representative for South East Asia, and Australian Senior Trade Commissioner to France, Sallyanne Atkinson is well qualified to fill this position,” Mr Mickel said.

“She has proven herself an excellent representative of Queensland and Australia over many years with broad trade experience and an extensive list of business contacts.

“Her well-known dedication to growth in our State and its economy will be invaluable to our trade relationship and friendship with Brazil, one of Queensland’s key export markets identified for future growth.

“The Queensland Government maintains a strong relationship with Brazil as our largest trading partner in Latin America, and our 12th largest trading partner overall.

“Earlier this year, I welcomed a Brazilian delegation led by Vice Governor Professor Antonio Anastasia to Queensland and signed a Joint Declaration with the State of Minas Gerais.

“As part of this visit, the Queensland Roar FC also signed a broad collaboration agreement with Atletico Mineiro Football Club of Minas Gerais.

“The Queensland Roar FC continues to play a major part in promoting the Queensland / Brazil relationship. A friendly soccer match on July 12 at Suncorp Stadium against Brazilian club FC Palmeiras will support ‘Queensland Roars against Racism', a program supported by the Queensland Government to combat racism in our communities.

“Brazil is one of the State's top 10 student recruitment markets and a growing market for inbound tourism.

“The Government has also identified Brazil as a strong potential market for mining services and equipment and we will be looking to Sallyanne Atkinson to assist in building and adding to the value of these and other export markets,” Mr Mickel said.

In 2006/07, Queensland’s merchandise exports to Brazil totalled $693.8 million.
