Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
New Bundaberg rescue chopper to boost region services
The Queensland Government has welcomed the emergency helicopter service boost with the launch of a new twin-engine chopper to be based at the Bundaberg Airport today.
Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said the Sunshine Coast Helicopter Rescue Service (SCHRS) will be able to improve service levels for the Fraser Coast, Burnett, Wide Bay and surrounding communities.
The new helicopter, a BK117 model, complements the BK117 operating out of Sunshine Coast airport. The helicopters are twin-engine, Instrument Flight Rules capable aircraft.
“This new helicopter boasts greater capability and safety in poor weather conditions or extended flights over water. It is equipped with the latest technology required to respond effectively to emergencies,” Mr Roberts said.
“The new helicopter being launched today replaces a single-engine chopper, operating under Visual Flight Rules. The upgraded service offers enhanced operational capability and safety considerations through increased cabin space and lift capacity.”
Mr Roberts said the Government grant to the service of $3.56 million, generous sponsorships such as those provided by Energex and local government, and a lot of hard work from SCHRS enable them to maintain the service for the local community.
The SCHRS was Queensland’s first Community Helicopter Provider, officially commencing operations from a base at The Big Cow, Yandina, in 1979. The SCHRS base at Bundaberg commenced on a trial basis in 1998 and was given permanent status in July 2001.
It will also provide improved medical care and access to Queenslanders involved in emergencies in this area.
The Government’s support for emergency helicopter rescue services extends beyond the Sunshine Coast Helicopter Rescue Service here at Bundaberg and at its Sunshine Coast Airport base at Marcoola.
The Government supports community helicopter rescue services with bases at Mackay, Rockhampton, Gold Coast and Toowoomba, and contracts a service in the Torres Strait.
The Government also operates its emergency rescue helicopter services out of bases in Brisbane (Archerfield), Townsville and Cairns.
The Government has been upgrading its fleet with the commitment of $48 million to deploy a new Agusta Westland (AW) 139 helicopters for each of these bases.
