Broncos star gives racism the boot

Communities and Multicultural Affairs Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has announced Justin Hodges will swap his familiar oval footy for a round one this weekend when he sets foot on Suncorp Stadium.

"Justin is joining everyday Queenslanders, sports stars and celebrities to send a clear message to the community that we must remain vigilant in keeping racism out of our communities and off of our sports fields," Ms Lindy Nelson-Carr said today.

"The Queensland Government’s Roars Against Racism campaign is doing just that, and giving families an afternoon out to enjoy entertainment and some good football, with the Queensland Roar FC taking on Brazilian side, Palmeiras."

The celebrity showdown is the curtain raiser to the international match this Saturday, July 12, with gates opening at 5pm.

This year’s off-field entertainment will also take on a decidedly Brazilian theme to honour the arrival of the Sao Paulo-based Palmerias football side to Australia.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the game day wasn’t the only opportunity football fans have to add to their autograph collections, with three pre-game events planned for this Friday, July 11.

"In Brisbane’s Reddacliff Place at noon, I will launch the campaign in true Brazilian-style with a plethora of performances who will get your blood pumping and your feet tapping, finishing in a carnivale-style procession through the city from 1.30pm," she said.

"Reddacliff Place will also come alive on Friday night with a Latin Dance Party, featuring both Palmeiras and Roar players."

The Queensland Roars Against Racism football event will be held at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, July 12. The celebrity match kicks off at 5.15pm and the main game at 7pm.

Tickets are available via Ticketek on 132 849, at Ticketek outlets or online at www.ticketek.com.au Family tickets (two adults and two children) start at $38.
