Holland America cruise ship bound for Queensland in 2010

Premium cruise line Holland America will now include Brisbane in its itinerary next year – with the inaugural voyage set for 2010.

Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said the Volendam’s arrival in Queensland in 2010 would generate big economic returns for the state and put Brisbane Cruise Terminal on the international cruise shipping map.

“The Volendam which is now bound for Queensland, is one of Holland America’s largest cruise ships, holding up to 1824 passengers,” Ms Boyle said.

“It is estimated that each time she berths in a Queensland port, it generates up to $750,000 in direct economic returns for the destination.

“This is fantastic news for our tourism industry.

“The economic benefits of these visits will be felt right across the tourism industry, from restaurants to tour operators.”

Ms Boyle said Holland America’s decision to add Brisbane to its itinerary was largely thanks to lobbying by Tourism Queensland at this year’s Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention in the US.

“This is a great testament to the work our peak tourism body is doing to grow tourism in this state,” Ms Boyle said.

Holland America Line's fleet of 13 mid-size ships offer nearly 500 sailings from 33 homeports, visiting all seven continents.

Ms Boyle said the Queensland Government under the Queensland Tourism Strategy (QTS) was committed to driving new and important tourism investment and infrastructure in the state.

“A Cruise Queensland partnership between Tourism Queensland and Brookfield Multiplex has been established to ensure we maximise the use of Queensland’s port facilities,” Ms Boyle said.

“Cruise shipping generates more than $132 million for the Queensland economy each year and it is important that we work to grow this market.”

Brookfield Multiplex Developments Australia Director Shane Bulloch said the strong partnership between Portside Wharf, Tourism Queensland and industry ensured cruise visitors to Queensland had the best possible facilities supported by the highest level of service.

“The development of Portside Wharf has created a state-of-the-art, modern cruise terminal facility that is considered to be among the best in the world,” Mr Bulloch said.

“The surrounding Portside Wharf precinct is also becoming one of Queensland’s premier destinations for locals and visitors, boasting some of the city’s best restaurants and cafes, fresh food markets, cinemas, chic boutiques and a premium function centre.

“The Cruise Queensland partnership has helped ensure we maximise the use of these new world-class port facilities.”
