Artists short-listed for Xstrata emerging Indigenous art award
Arts Minister Rod Welford today announced the 10 artists short-listed for the $30,000 2008 Xstrata Coal Emerging Indigenous Art Award.
Mr Welford said this year’s award was the final in what had been a successful three-year partnership between Xstrata Coal and the Queensland Art Gallery.
“The Xstrata Coal Emerging Indigenous Art Award was first presented in 2006 and was Australia’s first award dedicated exclusively to emerging Indigenous art. It has made an important contribution to emerging Indigenous art in Australia,” Mr Welford said.
“The 2008 winner will be announced on Friday 11 July and the exhibition of the short-listed works on show at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) from 11 July–12 October.”
The short-listed artists are – Gunybi Ganambarr (Gangan, NT), Loongkoonan (Derby, WA), Milly Kelly (Jigalong/Newman, WA), Beaver Lennon (Ceduna, SA), Patsy Marfura (Peppimenarti, NT), Archie Moore (Brisbane, Qld), Josie Kunoth Petyarre and Dinni Kunoth Kemarra (Utopia, NT), Glenn Pilkington (Perth, WA) and Daniel Walbidi (Bidyadanga, WA).
Queensland Art Gallery Director Tony Ellwood said the partnership with Xstrata Coal has involved an annual exhibition, an acquisitive award with a prize of $30,000, and a grant of $50,000 for the acquisition of art works for the Gallery’s collection.
“During the life of the award, 28 artists have been short-listed and exhibited at the Gallery,” Mr Ellwood said.
“In addition, the 17 art works that have been acquired with funds from Xstrata Coal will continue to be enjoyed by the Gallery’s audiences.”
Xstrata Coal Chief Executive Peter Freyberg said the award was an important part of the company’s 2008 Corporate Social Involvement initiative, which has contributed $8 million to community partnerships throughout New South Wales and Queensland.
“We are proud to be working with the Queensland Art Gallery to provide emerging Indigenous artists with an opportunity for their art to reach a broader national audience,” Mr Freyberg said.
“Through this initiative we have helped build a valuable public collection of the country’s rising indigenous stars from across Australia.”
