Queensland’s court users now have easy access to information that will help them understand the legal system and the process involved with going to court.
The new ‘Going to court’ resources were launched today by the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine and the Member for Barron River Steve Wettenhall.

“For people who have never come before the courts, the processes involved with preparing for court, appearing in court and what happens after a court appearance can be quite daunting," Mr Shine said.

“The three 'Going to court' brochures, together with an excellent website, will help people due to come before the courts feel more comfortable about what happens in courtrooms in the Magistrates, Supreme and District Courts.

“The resources will be distributed through court registries, Legal Aid Queensland, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, community legal services and victim support groups, among others.”

Mr Wettenhall joined Mr Shine to launch the resources today at the Cairns Courthouse.

"The brochures are in an easy-to-read format, and feature useful diagrams which illustrate the way different court rooms are set up and how a matter will progress through the courts," Mr Wettenhall said.

“With an increasing number of court users in Queensland, the ‘Going to Court’ resources will help ensure that people appearing before the courts are equipped with a thorough knowledge of how their matter will proceed.”

Mr Shine said the material will initially focus on criminal matters, but will be extended to include civil and domestic violence matters in the near future.

“The ‘Going to Court’ series of brochures will provide a user-friendly guide for people interacting with the criminal justice system," he said.
