NINE ARTISTS SHORTLISTED FOR NATIONAL NEW MEDIA ART AWARD

Premier Anna Bligh today announced the nine artists short-listed for the inaugural $75 000 Premier of Queensland’s National Art Award in New Media.

Ms Bligh said the prestigious national art award was Australia’s most significant prize for new media and celebrated the skill and creativity of Australian artists working across a range of new media art forms.

“This is the most substantial prize for new media, one of the most dynamic new art forms in existence today, in this country,” Ms Bligh said.

“It is my great pleasure to announce the nine artists short-listed for the inaugural award are Peter Alwast (QLD), Julie Dowling (WA), Anita Fontaine (QLD/NL), Joyce Hinterding and David Haines (NSW), Natalie Jeremijenko (QLD/USA), Adam Nash (VIC), Sam Smith (NSW), John Tonkin (NSW) and Mari Velonaki (NSW).

“These artists are working in challenging and innovative ways with a range of new technologies including video, digital animation and gaming, computer-based art, artificial intelligence and other sound and communication new media.

“On October 31 one of these talented individuals will receive $75 000 for their award-winning work and in addition, an emerging new media artist living and working in Queensland will receive a $25,000 travel and study scholarship.

“I encourage emerging new media artists from across Queensland to apply for the scholarship, which presents a unique opportunity to develop aspects of their creative practice in new media.

“The award complements the national role GoMA has taken as the most challenging and forward looking contemporary art gallery in Australia,” she said.

Judging the award winner and the scholarship recipient is Queensland Art Gallery Director Tony Ellwood; Executive Director of the Australian Network for Art and Technology, Dr Melinda Rackham; and Executive Director of Experimenta Media Arts, Caroline Farmer.

Queensland Art Gallery Director Tony Ellwood said the Premier of Queensland’s National Art Award in New Media was a wonderful new initiative for artists working in new media.

“The biennial award is a significant recognition of new media art and sends a strong message about Queensland’s vision and commitment to supporting innovation and creativity in the visual arts.

“These artists are generating some of the most exciting developments in contemporary art today.

“The award exhibition will be on display in GoMA’s new media gallery from November 1, 2008 to February 8, 2009 and following the October 31 announcement the award-winning work will become part of the Queensland Art Gallery’s collection,” Mr Ellwood said.

Expressions of interest applications for the Premier’s New Media Art Scholarship can be lodged until September 5. Forms can be downloaded online at www.qag.qld.gov.au/new_media and submitted directly to the Gallery.
