The Honourable Andrew McNamara
Yeppoon company, Groves Grown Tropical Fruit, is in the running for one of Queensland’s top environment awards.
Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation, Andrew McNamara today announced that Groves Grown Tropical Fruit was one of three finalists in the Rural Sustainability category of the 2008 Environmental Protection Agency’s Sustainable Industries Awards.
“The Groves family orchard, on the northern outskirts of Yeppoon, is involved in mango, lychee and caranbola (star fruit) production,” Mr McNamara said.
“To successfully manage and expand production, orchard owners Ian and Sandi Groves have adopted a holistic management approach.
“There orchard features wind break trees, run off catchment ponds, and total enclosure netting techniques to protect crops from wildlife.”
Mr McNamara said the finalists had been selected from more than 100 innovative entries from small business to large multi-million dollar companies.
Member for Keppel, Paul Hoolihan, congratulated the company for their selection as a finalist in the EPA’s awards.
“The Groves are committed to running a successful business, but show a genuine interest and concern for local native wildlife by implementing non-lethal methods to control the damage caused by flying foxes in the area.”
The Rural Sustainability category, sponsored by Australian Country Choice, is awarded to a primary producer for sustainable primary production and stewardship of the natural capital underpinning the business.
The EPA Sustainable Industries Awards aim to increase awareness of the advantages of sustainable practices such as reducing energy and water use, reducing waste and minimising greenhouse gas emissions.
Mr McNamara said the finalists for the awards had been selected from more than 100 entries ranging from small business to large multi-million dollar companies.
“Queensland has visionary companies that are committed to developing innovative products and practices that reduce consumption of fossil fuels, water, waste and greenhouse gas emissions,” Mr McNamara said.
Award winners will be announced at a gala dinner at the Gold Coast Exhibition and Convention Centre on Friday, 31 October 2008.
