North Stradbroke project finalist in Queensland environmental awards

Mining company Consolidated Rutile Limited is in the running for one of Queensland’s top environment awards for their progressive rehabilitation of land at their sand-mining operation on North Stradbroke Island.

Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation, Andrew McNamara today announced that CRL was a finalist in the 2008 Environmental Protection Agency Sustainable Industries Awards.

“CRL’s continuous rehabilitation of land at the Dunwich sand mine is achieving a self-sustaining ecosystem similar to pre-mine conditions.

“Operating on the island since 1966, CRL progressively rehabilitates more than 75 hectares each year and has more than 4,000 hectares of land already under rehabilitation.”

Mr McNamara said the finalists had been selected from more than 100 innovative entries from small business to large multi-million dollar companies, showcasing Queensland's diverse range of ‘sustainability champions’.

“We have visionary companies right here in Queensland that are committed to developing innovative products and practices that reduce consumption of fossil fuels water, waste and greenhouse gas emissions,” Mr McNamara said.

The Resources Industry Sustainability Award sponsored by Queensland Resources Council is a new award category, to recognise the sustainability achievements of the mining industry.

Member for Cleveland, Phil Weightman, congratulated CRL on becoming a finalist.

“CRL are highly deserving of being named a finalist, as the first mining company in Queensland to have rehabilitation criteria approved and included in its Environmental Authority.

“CRL’s rehabilitation criteria ensures the organisation uses rigorous, well-tested operations to minimise environmental risk and ensure a sustainable ecosystem once mining operations have ceased,” he said.

Mr McNamara said the 2008 EPA Sustainable Industries Awards aimed to increase awareness of the advantages of sustainable practices such as reducing energy and water use, reducing waste and minimising greenhouse gas emissions.

Winners will be announced at a gala dinner at the Gold Coast Exhibition and Convention Centre on Friday, 31 October 2008.
