Midell Developments nominated for top environment award

A sustainable residential development, at Agnes Waters, is in the running for one of Queensland’s top environment awards.

Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation Andrew McNamara today announced that Midell Developments was a finalist in the 2008 Environmental Protection Agency Sustainable Industries Awards.

“Midell Development’s ‘Sunrise at 1770’ at Agnes Waters is an environmentally sustainable village.

“The development used leading water and waste management strategies to conserve the area’s existing ecosystems and natural heritage,” Mr McNamara said.

“Strict building covenants, open spaces, and low impact housing minimises the site’s effect on the local eco-system and encourages a sense of connection between people and nature.

“The company’s commitment to conservation has also been proven through the donation of land, known as the Reedy Creek Nature Reserve, for conservation.”

Mr McNamara said the finalists had been selected from more than 100 innovative entries from small business to large multi-million dollar companies, showcasing Queensland's diverse range of ‘sustainability champions’.

“We have visionary companies right here in Queensland that are committed to developing innovative products and practices that reduce consumption of fossil fuels water, waste and greenhouse gas emissions,” Mr McNamara said.

“The Queensland Government, through the EPA’s Sustainable Industries Awards, now in their third year, is committed to helping Queensland business and industry develop Smart State technologies that reduce environmental impacts.

“The record number of nominations this year highlights outstanding work of businesses adopting sustainable practices in a competitive market place," Mr McNamara said.

“Midell Developments have created an environmentally and socially responsible village where people can enjoy the usual comforts without polluting the natural environment.”

The Sustainability in the Built Environment category, sponsored by Ergon Energy, is awarded to an innovative organisation showcasing the sustainability business opportunity in urban development.

The other finalists in this category include architects Allen Jack+Cottier’s sustainable student housing design and Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd for ‘Green Square’ – a mixed use corporate office park.

The EPA Sustainable Industries Awards aim to increase awareness of the advantages of sustainable practices such as reducing energy and water use, reducing waste and minimising greenhouse gas emissions.

Winners will be announced at a gala dinner at the Gold Coast Exhibition and Convention Centre on Friday, 31 October 2008.
