Sunshine Coast businesses nominated for Queensland’s top environment awards

A ginger factory and printing service on the Sunshine Coast are finalists in Queensland’s top environment awards thanks to their dedication to sustainability.

Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation, Andrew McNamara today announced that Buderim Ginger and Complete Printing Services were nominated for the Environmental Protection Agency Sustainable Industries Awards 2008.

“Buderim Ginger have been announced as a finalist in the Industrial Eco-Efficiency category of the awards,” Mr McNamara said.

“This category, sponsored by Fosters Group, is awarded for outstanding performance in eco-efficiency.

“Buderim Ginger has used new technologies to significantly reduce their water use and gas consumption.

“The company has developed a system that allows the wastewater to be recycled.

“Since Buderim Ginger introduced the new system in 2007 it has saved around 330,000 litres of gas, 30,000 litres of water, 18,000 litres of waste water, with further savings anticipated in 2008.”

Mr McNamara said Queensland Complete Printing Services was nominated for the Corporate Sustainability category.

“This category, sponsored by Westpac, will be awarded to an organisation for making corporate sustainability the cornerstone of its business.

“Queensland Complete Printing Service (QCPS) is a small business with 16 staff.

“QCPS aspires to be a leader in green printing and has introduced soy-based inks to replace toxic chemical inks.

“The company also purchases chlorine-free papers from sustainable plantation timbers and uses rainwater for all of their printing processes,” Mr McNamara said.

The EPA Sustainable Industries Awards aim to increase awareness of the advantages of sustainable practices such as reducing energy and water use, reducing waste and minimising greenhouse gas emissions.

Mr McNamara said the finalists for the awards had been selected from more than 100 entries ranging from small business to large multi-million dollar companies.

“Queensland has visionary companies that are committed to reducing consumption of fossil fuels, water, waste and greenhouse gas emissions,” Mr McNamara said.

Award winners will be announced at a gala dinner at the Gold Coast Exhibition and Convention Centre on Friday, 31 October 2008.
