The countdown is on to red card racism at the biggest soccer game so far this year when Queensland Roar takes on high-profile Brazilian team, Palmeiras, at Suncorp Stadium on July 12 as part of the Bligh Government’s Roar Against Racism campaign.

Communities and Multicultural Affairs Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr today announced the business end of town was also getting on board, with Gorilla Sports signing up to sponsor a curtain-raiser celebrity match.

“It’s great to see business supporting a very worthy cause and I congratulate Gorilla for supplying the uniforms so our celebrity teams can look the part when they step out onto Suncorp Stadium’s hallowed turf,” she said.

“The celebrity match will be bigger and better than last year and I look forward to announcing the line-up very soon – with members from the Brisbane community as well as some well-known names.”

Based in Geebung, Gorilla Sports – which is a new brand of Buffalo Sport Qld – supplies everything to do with football including equipment, clothing, footwear, balls and accessories, and will kit-out all players in the celebrity game on match day.

Buffalo Sport Qld Managing Director Michael Hayes said he was honoured to be supporting the campaign and he was looking forward to some on-field action.

“It’s great to see an international team come to Queensland and it will be an amazing game showcasing the football prowess from both teams,” he said.

“It will be great to see families enjoying the South American flavours of football, made famous by household names like Pele, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho.”

Queensland company Bosform has signed up to be one of the first company’s to hire a corporate box to show their support for the game and the Roar against Racism campaign.

“This is a chance to see some of the world’s best football players and celebrities in action at one of the top facilities around, so Queenslanders can use it as an opportunity to celebrate our sporting and cultural traditions as we say join forces to say ‘no’ to racism,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“Palmeiras is one of the most popular football clubs in Brazil, so it’s fabulous to have them here in Queensland.

Also today, Ms Nelson-Carr announced the celebrity curtain-raiser match would give supporters some fun ahead of the big international showdown.

”The two celebrity teams give the crowd a real warm up and I’m looking forward to releasing details of the sides soon,” she said.

The celebrity curtain-raiser will kick off at 5.15pm, before the main game at 7pm.
