Community fund delivers $1million post-Budget boost for not-for-profit groups

After delivering his first State Budget last month, Treasurer Andrew Fraser today announced more than $1 million in funding for South-East Queensland not-for-profit groups through the latest round of the Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund.

Mr Fraser said 36 organisations would benefit from the fund’s 61st grants round, including a marine rescue service, a homeless outreach service and a community service delivering food parcels.

He said the Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund provided a vital boost to grass roots organisations which supported their local communities.

“These are the groups which often rely on volunteer goodwill and they require and deserve a helping hand,” Mr Fraser said.

“Not-for-profit organisations deliver important services and foster community spirit and as these groups are often in a situation where they have to make every dollar stretch, the grants provide vital financial support for services which may otherwise be unavailable.

“The grants enable these not-for-profit groups to continue serving as the backbone for their community, providing tangible benefits through a broad cross-section of services.”

Organisations which will receive funding in this round include:

? Volunteer Marine Rescue Southport/Surfers Paradise which receives $55,638 to replace two outboard motors
? Loaves & Fishes Street Meet Care Service which receives $89,475 to purchase a refridgerated truck
? The Lions Club of Redlands which receives $40,000 to build an amenities block
? Riding for Disabled Association which receives $12,371 toward a resource centre
? Street Swags which receives $30,000 to purchase a vehicle and trailer

Since the inception of the Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund in 1987, more than 2,950 grants have been allocated, totalling more than $73 million.

The Fund is generated from a levy placed on the gaming revenue of Jupiters Casino on the Gold Coast and Treasury Casino in Brisbane. It services an area from the Queensland/New South Wales border to the northern boundaries of the central Queensland regions of Boulia, Winton, Barcaldine and Isaac.

Applications are accepted for grants up to $150,000 and all eligible organisations in the region are encouraged to apply. Grant allocations are announced quarterly and applications are accepted at any time.
