The Honourable Warren Pitt

Community input encouraged for Eight Mile Plains intersections

A joint Main Roads and Brisbane City Council planning study will give community members the chance to help develop upgrade options for two major Eight Mile Plains intersections.

The MPPL Planning Study will investigate local transport issues and explore opportunities to upgrade the Miles Platting, Padstow and Logan roads intersection, the Padstow and Warrigal roads intersection and the surrounding road network, as well as to ease traffic congestion in the local area.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt and Deputy Mayor and Chairperson for Infrastructure Councillor Graham Quirk announced the planning study today, and said community feedback would play a key role in developing future upgrade options.

“I want to encourage the local community, business operators and regular road users to get involved, and have their say about the issues that affect these intersections,” Mr Pitt said.

"The planning study will begin in July, with stage one focusing on identifying current issues with the road network’s operation.

“Stage two will see options developed for community comment and stage three will identify a preferred option for final community consultation."

The planning study is expected to be complete by early 2009.

Councillor Quirk said the Rochedale Urban Community Master Plan had identified a future population increase for the area, from the current 1,200 residents to approximately 17,000 residents over the next 15 to 20 years.

“The volume of traffic travelling through these intersections has increased significantly in recent years, increasing congestion and affecting the efficiency of surrounding roads,” Councillor Quirk said.

"The feedback we receive during the planning study will enable us to identify possible upgrade solutions.

“Our aim is to ensure the road network copes with the expected future growth.”

The first phase of community consultation will commence in early July 2008 and will run until August 2008.

During this time Main Roads and Brisbane City Council are asking for the community to provide their feedback on the current traffic and transport issues facing the intersections and surrounding road network.

To assist in the feedback process, a newsletter with information on the study and further details about the community consultation program will be distributed to the businesses and residents in the local area in the coming weeks.
