The Honourable John Mickel

Queensland innovations to gain exposure on ABC Television’s

Two exciting Queensland inventions will feature on ABC TV’s The New Inventors on Wednesday 2 July.

Minister for Trade John Mickel said that both inventions were world-class and excellent candidates for international exports.

“The quality and ingenuity of these knowledge-based innovations are strong reminders that Queensland has enormous potential in the development and production of new products to service a range of industries worldwide,” Mr Mickel said.

“Highlighting the importance of small manufacturing industries to Queensland’s economy, Smart State exports of these ‘miscellaneous manufactures’ in 2006-07 were worth A$31.9 million.

“Sunshine Coast locals Peter Zillmer and Nicole Allmann have invented the Escape Stirrup which is designed to assist equestrians when they fall or are thrown from their horse,” Mr Mickel said.

“These Queensland innovators have identified a product that has the potential to be a global success. Everybody who rides a horse, no matter how experienced, eventually has a fall.

“About 85 per cent of riding injuries result from a fall, and falls are typically more serious when a rider is caught up in a stirrup and dragged behind the horse. Peter and Nicole’s breakaway design enables the rider to get free of the stirrup more quickly and easily. It is a great invention with a potentially global market,” said Mr Mickel.
Two other Queensland inventors, Mike Walrond and Gavin Broadley from Brendale in Brisbane north will also feature on the same episode of The New Inventors with their Arachnipod invention.

“The simplicity and robust engineering of this invention makes it an ideal tool for those in vital industries such as rescue and height safety. The Arachnipod provides a single solution for ‘edge management’ scenarios not previously offered,” said Mr Mickel.

The Arachnipod is based around the concept of an industrial tripod however the modular design enables components to be added or removed as required, complementing existing structural features, making it a versatile, safe and cost effective total edge management system. It was recently awarded an Australian International Design Mark™.

“Both of these inventions are excellent illustrations of the creativity and capacity of Queensland’s innovative product developers and manufacturers. These are the kinds of people that keep our export sectors diverse and vibrant,” Mr Mickel said.

Minister Mickel urged as many Queenslanders as possible to watch the relevant episode of The New Inventors, and to support Queensland products in the People’s Choice Awards.
