Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Councils share in $2 million for nuisance monitoring
Queensland councils will share in $2 million in State Government funding to upgrade their noise and water pollution monitoring capabilities.
Local Government Minister Warren Pitt said the one-off nuisance management grants would help councils fulfil their responsibilities under the Environmental Protection Act.
“Local governments have jurisdiction over the regulation of commercial nuisances and minor water pollution matters and this funding will help them purchase the equipment necessary to fulfil this role,” Mr Pitt said.
“Seventy-three councils will receive grants ranging from $6400 to $380,000, depending on the size and population of the council area.
“The grant is specifically for the purchase of noise and water quality monitoring or the associated vehicle costs.”
“The government is aware that some councils have already purchased environmental monitoring equipment in recent years, so in the interests of equity, their associated capital expenditure between 1 July 2003 and 30 June 2009 will be eligible for reimbursement through a nuisance management grant.”
Mr Pitt said the funding had been brought forward from the Department of Local Government’s Environmental Infrastructure Program.
“The Environmental Infrastructure Program is an important government initiative that is helping to protect Queensland’s unique environment and quality of life,” he said.
“This new program will support councils in achieving improved environmental outcomes in their local communities.”
