The Honourable John Mickel
Korea marine trade mission paying off for Queensland
A Queensland Government-led trade mission to the Korea International Boat Show in mid June is already paying dividends for the State.
Minister for Trade John Mickel, who led the mission, said today that a number of significant business deals and agreements had been secured during and since the trade mission which took place between June 9 and 13.
“Last night we saw an agreement signed between Yacht Korea Boat Show and Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show that will enable and encourage collaboration on international promotion of the two events,” Mr Mickel said.
“A second Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between Superior Jetties and Shinhwa Marine / JTS for licensing of pontoon manufacturing.
“During the trade mission, Southern Cross Yachting also sealed a business deal to provide sail training to hundreds of Korean students.
“The training agreement will see the Manly-based company setting up its first overseas training franchise in Korea, and delivering advanced sail training to Korean students here in Queensland,” Mr Mickel said.
Minister Mickel said that as part of the Korea Trade Mission he had also issued an invitation on behalf of the Premier to the Governor Gyeongnam Province Tae Ho Kim to visit Queensland. The Governor arrived in Queensland yesterday and will depart tomorrow.
“Today, Governor Kim will join Premier Anna Bligh to sign a major Queensland-Gyeongnam agreement focusing on the marine industry.
“Governor Kim is a strong advocate and leader in the development of marine industries and infrastructure in Korea. His visit is an opportunity for Queensland to become further involved in servicing the current exponential growth in the development of a recreational boating industry and marine infrastructure in Korea.
“The agreement signing in Queensland is a sign of the strength of the Queensland-Gyeongnam relationship and is expected to further increase opportunities for Queensland’s marine businesses,” Minister Mickel said.
A meeting yesterday between Governor Kim and the Gold Coast institute of TAFE highlighted the marine capabilities of the Gold Coast and confirmed TAFE’s willingness to work with Korea to develop and deliver education courses tailored to the needs of the Korean industry now and in the future.
