Korean leader’s Gold Coast visit strengthening Queensland marine industry ties

A visit to the Gold Coast this week from Gyeongnam Province Governor Tae Ho Kim is expected to increase opportunities for Queensland’s marine businesses.

Governor Kim’s two-day visit to Queensland commencing yesterday (30 June) will cement an already strong Queensland-Gyeongnam relationship. It will also build on the recent trade mission led by Minster for Trade John Mickel with representatives of 15 Queensland marine businesses to attend the Korea International Boat Show from June 11 to15.

“Governor Kim is a strong advocate and leader in the development of marine industries and infrastructure in Korea. His visit is an opportunity for Queensland to become further involved in servicing the current exponential growth in the development of a recreational boating industry and marine infrastructure in Korea,” Mr Mickel said today.

“The visit to Queensland will include the signing today of a major Queensland-Gyeongnam agreement focusing on the marine industry.

“Gyeongnam has eight marina development projects worth $210M to be undertaken over the next decade, representing significant opportunities for Queensland’s highly skilled, competitive and reliable businesses specialising in boat building as well as marine infrastructure, accessories, education and management.

Mr Mickel said that the visit also includes meetings with businesses and a state-based education provider to investigate and confirm other agreements that will help to further advance Korea’s marine capabilities in Gyeongnam Province.

“Governor Kim met yesterday with the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE, and attended a welcome function in Brisbane last night including further Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signings involving Gold Coast based Superior Jetties and the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show,” Mr Mickel said.

Queensland is widely acclaimed as Australia’s premier marine State. The Gold Coast, Cairns and Brisbane are home to much of Queensland’s marine business activity with significant marine business precincts also emerging on the Sunshine, Capricorn, Whitsunday and Hinchinbrook Coasts, as well as in Townsville.
