BLIGH GOVERNMENT SEEKS COMMENT ON FUTURE OF STATE LAND AT BLUFF TOWNSHIP

Bluff residents are encouraged to have their say on the future of four parcels of state land to the north of their township by commenting on a land use planning study.

Natural Resources and Water Minister Craig Wallace said the Bluff Most Appropriate Use of State Land Study includes about 813 hectares of state land.

“The Bligh Government is seeking community views on four lots of land directly to the north of Bluff,” Mr Wallace said.

“This land has a range of potential uses and values including conservation, grazing, recreation and cultural heritage.”

These lots include former coal mining areas, riparian lands adjacent to Duckworth Creek and land surrounding the Bluff-Blackwater Racecourse.

The land also supports areas of remnant vegetation that may provide an important habitat for the endangered Bridled Nailtail Wallaby, located in nearby Taunton National Park.

“The Bligh Government is keen to hear the public’s thoughts on how it should be best used,” Mr Wallace said.

“We’ll be seeking feedback and liaising with council and community members on the future uses of the land.

“This study provides an opportunity to ensure the land is used and managed appropriately.”

The study involves undertaking a most appropriate use and most appropriate tenure assessment of the lots as a requirement under the state Land Act 1994.

“This will allow us to assess the values and management issues associated with the land and recommend the most appropriate tenure,’’ Mr Wallace said.

A map outlining the study lots has been developed and released to the Central Highlands Regional Council, neighbouring landholders, community groups and government departments.

Public submissions on the study close on Monday, July 28, 2008, and should be forwarded to the Department of Natural Resources and Water, PO Box 1762, Rockhampton, Qld, 4700.
