The Honourable Warren Pitt

New traffic signals to improve safety in Sarina

Main Roads will start installing traffic signals at a Sarina intersection this week to improve safety along the Bruce Highway.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said work was due to start on the $500,000 project, at the intersection of the Bruce Highway and Anzac Street, tomorrow (July 1).

"This busy intersection caters for a diverse traffic mix and has been identified as needing safety improvements," Mr Pitt said.

"Main Roads reviewed the intersection after concerns raised by the local Traffic Advisory Committee, and identified a number of potential improvements, including a roundabout or traffic signals.

"Installing traffic signals was selected as the best option to improve accessibility from side roads and improve safety for pedestrians as well."

Mr Pitt said resealing works would also be carried out on the highway from the Sarina Beach Road turnoff to Johnson Street.

He said Main Roads had worked with the previous Sarina Shire Council to provide a solution to the busy intersection and had sought input from directly affected residents.

More than 11,000 vehicles travel through this section of the Bruce Highway in Sarina each day.

The works will be carried out by Main Roads’ construction arm, RoadTek, and are expected to be completed by the end of August 2008.

Mr Pitt said the work was part of $177 million in funding for road projects in the Mackay-Whitsunday region under the 2008-09 State Budget.
