People with a disability requiring support will have increased access to accommodation services, thanks to a $3.4 million boost from the Queensland Government.

Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr was visiting the Hervey Bay Community Access Association to congratulate them on the new service the funding of more than $150,000 would provide.

Minister Nelson-Carr has been in Maryborough and Hervey Bay with the Premier, her Cabinet and the State's senior public servants for the Bligh Government's seventh Community Cabinet.

“It is a key part of the Government's commitment to listen to Queenslanders’ concerns on their own home turf and get out and meet local organisations and service providers,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

Minister Nelson-Carr said 14 organisations would share the Accommodation Services funding to enhance the delivery of specialist services.

“The funding will enable community-based organisations to facilitate secure and affordable accommodation support for people with a disability,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“It will also provide a continuum of accommodation support services that meet varying individual needs, including long-term, in-home, transitional and emergency and crisis support.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said the Accommodation Services Initiative was part of the Queensland Government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing support for people with a disability.

“This funding builds on the $11 million that has been allocated to accommodation services over the past three years, taking the total funding for initiatives aimed at increasing service delivery to $24 million,” she said.

“My department conducted research to identify which DSQ regions had the greatest need for this support, so additional resources can be directed towards those who need them most.

“The successful organisations are situated in these priority locations.

“I’m confident they will enhance opportunities for people with a disability to access appropriate and high quality accommodation services to meet their individual needs.”
