$1.3 million for homeless: Minister

Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has today announced $1.3 million in funding to support crisis accommodation for homeless people on the Fraser Coast.

Minister Nelson-Carr has been in Maryborough and Hervey Bay with the Premier, her Cabinet and the State's senior public servants for the Bligh Government's seventh Community Cabinet.

“It is a key part of the Government's commitment to listen to Queenslanders’ concerns on their own home turf and get out and meet local organisations and service providers,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“We are taking on board their views as the Premier and Government plan for the future.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said the three-year funding package announced today would support the work of Fraser Coast Housing Services which offers safe and secure shelter to more than 100 Queenslanders in need.

“People who experience homelessness can become disenfranchised and dislocated from society, and they need help to find and maintain stable and secure housing,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“By providing short-term support and case management during these critical times, clients have a better chance of getting their lives back on track.”

Fraser Coast Housing Services operates 12 Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP) homes for individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness – including women and children escaping domestic violence.

It also operates the 16-bed Coolooli Men’s Shelter Service.

“These SAAP homes support some 24 adults and 72 children,” said the Minister.

“Other services on the Fraser Coast include crisis intervention and referrals to other agencies.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said the three-year funding package would enable continuity of the services.

“The Bligh Government has a strong commitment to helping the most vulnerable in our community and addressing homelessness is a core element of that,” she said.

“We will continue to work with local organisations to strengthen their capacity to deliver this vital support.”
