Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson

A new e-bulletin and it’s a gas

Natural gas suppliers can now tap into a new national online gas bulletin board to check daily flows in Australia’s gas transmission pipeline system.

Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said the new national gas market bulletin board would provide stakeholders with the latest information about the country’s natural gas markets.

“This new gas bulletin board has the potential to open up exciting trade possibilities in the gas industry. Before it came into existence, there was no central information collection point,” Mr Wilson said.

“Gas is going full steam ahead in Queensland and the Bligh Government is backing it all the way.

“Its success is due in no small part to our 13% gas scheme which requires electricity retailers to source at least 13% of their energy form gas-fired generation. We’re going to increase the gas scheme to 18% by 2020,” he said.

“Gas is in abundance in the Surat Basin, so our gas scheme is an investment in people who live and work in towns such as Miles, Dalby and Chinchilla. We’re giving them jobs and job security.

“The Liberals and the Nationals are at loggerheads over our 13% gas scheme. The Liberals support it. The Nationals don’t.

“There’s a Great Diving Range between them on this issue. And while they go at it hammer and tongs, we’re out there, west of the Great Divide, rolling up our sleeves and getting on with the job of delivering cleaner power for all Queenslanders.

“We’ve already opened up more than 110,000 square kilometres of land to potential investors and our coal seam gas projects have yielded around $1 billion worth of development across the state.

“We have around 3,000 megawatts of gas-fired generation in the pipeline. Gas is good for the economy and good for the environment.

“We’re serious about tackling climate change and we see gas as a vital way forward to a cleaner energy future,” Mr Wilson said.
