The Honourable Neil Roberts

Disaster assistance activated for far west Qld

The Queensland Government has activated disaster assistance for the State's far west following damage from localised flooding earlier this month.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said the Department of Emergency Services had recommended that joint State-Commonwealth assistance be activated for the Barcoo and Diamantina shires in far western Queensland.

"The Department has received reports of almost $2 million damage to public infrastructure, primarily roads, in both shires due to localised flooding over the Queen's Birthday long weekend (7 to 9 June)," Mr Roberts said.

The estimated damage to date is $1.05 million in Barcoo shire and another $800,000 in Diamantina shire.

Mr Roberts said the Department had recommended Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) assistance for the restoration of essential public assets, primarily roads, and counter-disaster costs incurred by local councils be activated.
