Major upgrades planned for Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road
Maryborough: Premier Anna Bligh has inspected the sites of two major road upgrades planned for Maryborough–Hervey Bay Road, where works worth almost $30 million will take place during the next two years.
Ms Bligh, who inspected the sites today ahead of the upgrades, said the State Government had allocated $29.5 million for the two projects, which should be completed by mid 2010.
“Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road is an important regional road linking the Bruce Highway and Hervey Bay via Maryborough,” she said.
“These planned upgrades will accommodate future development in the area and support the region’s continued growth.”
Treasurer and Acting Main Roads Minister Andrew Fraser said the first project included widening and strengthening a 6.9km section of Maryborough–Hervey Bay Road, from north of the Dundowran Road intersection to the Pialba–Burrum Heads Road intersection.
"This work, which will cost $11.5 million, is expected to start within the next two months. The 6.9 km of road widening includes a new bitumen surface at least 10 metres wide, compared with the existing width which ranges from 6.5 metres to nine metres.
“The wider road will improve safety while the strengthened road surface will reduce maintenance costs.
“Five intersections will be upgraded as part of the project, while improvements will also be made to bus stop areas, property accesses, signage and overhead lighting,” he said.
Member for Hervey Bay Andrew McNamara said a second project, worth $18 million, would involve upgrading Maryborough–Hervey Bay Road between Dundowran Road and Torbanlea–Pialba Road, including intersection improvements.
“This work is expected to start next year and should be completed by June 2010.
“Since 2005, the State Government has spent more than $30 million on Maryborough–Hervey Bay Road and I am pleased that these two projects have been included in the $35.5 million allocated for the road during the next two years,” he said.
Ms Bligh is in Maryborough and Hervey Bay with her Cabinet and the State's senior public servants for the Government's seventh Community Cabinet.
"This is part of the government's commitment to listening to Queenslanders’ concerns on their home turf. It is part of taking on board their views as the government and I plan for the future,” she said.
