Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Indigenous celebrations begin across the State
Communities from the Murray Islands to Miami and Mackay to Mount Isa — and everywhere in between — will join together to celebrate Queensland’s rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture during NAIDOC Week from 6 to 13 July.
Communities and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said NAIDOC Week was a time to reflect on the past, present and future of Indigenous Queenslanders.
“NAIDOC Week is a time where we can all come together to celebrate the richness and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their cultures,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Indigenous and non-Indigenous people alike will take the opportunity to celebrate the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to this state in their own unique ways during this special week.
“I encourage all Queenslanders to find out what’s happening in their area as part of this week-long celebration and participate in some of the events and activities on offer to recognise and pay respect to Australia’s Indigenous culture and people.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said the Department of Communities was leading the whole-of-government approach to NAIDOC Week, and had provided $70,000 for community groups, schools and other organisations to stage events and activities throughout Queensland.
“I’m proud to support NAIDOC Week, which has become a significant cultural event that helps to raise awareness and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“I believe it also supports the very important process of reconciliation within Queensland.
“And this year, I think we have much to celebrate with significant progress and positive changes made within Queensland’s Indigenous communities in recent times.
“NAIDOC Week is an opportune time to look back at all that has been achieved by government and Indigenous communities working together.”
A highlight of the NAIDOC Week celebrations in Queensland will be a family fun day at Musgrave Park, South Brisbane on Friday 11 July.
