Nominate a Queensland champion: Minister

The hunt is on for Queenslanders doing extraordinary things in the disability sector.

Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said nominations are now open for the annual Disability Action Week Awards.

“These awards give Queenslanders the opportunity to acknowledge the many people, organisations and businesses across the State who are doing fabulous things to make their communities more inclusive for Queenslanders with a disability,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“I encourage Queenslanders to nominate an individual or organisation you feel deserves recognition for a 2008 Disability Action Week Award.”

The 2008 Disability Action Week Award categories are:

Individual
Employment
Transport
Local and State Government
Private Enterprise
Community Organisation
Media
Building Accessible Housing and Environments
Education and Arts
Human Rights and Justice
Ms Nelson-Carr said the Disability Action Week Awards are a highlight of Disability Action Week which this year will be held from September 14 to 20.

“This year’s theme is ‘See beyond the disability‘ which is a positive reminder to focus on a person’s abilities, aspirations and the contribution people with a disability make in every aspect of community, social and economic life in Queensland,” she said.

“It’s also a time to celebrate diversity and build a more inclusive community for all Queenslanders.”

Award nominations close Friday, August 8, with the awards to be presented in Brisbane during Disability Action Week.
