Nelson-Carr visits northern Cape and Thursday Island communities

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Lindy Nelson-Carr will this week visit northern Cape York Peninsular and Thursday Island.

Over the next two-days Ms Nelson-Carr will meet school children, elders, local community leaders and mens’ and womens’ groups.

Included in a wide-ranging itinerary she will inspect the Bamaga Hospital and the Injinoo Day Care Centre and view the site of a proposed Injinoo Eco menshed, a facility for learning traditional knowledge about caring for country and providing opportunities for men to learn parenting skills.

Discussions will also be held on proposals for a joint TAFE/Bamaga menshed where men would learn outboard motor and possibly vehicle maintenance.

“I look forward to talking through issues and initiatives that women, men and children living in the region may have and viewing some of the projects being put in place for the benefit of their local communities,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“It’s vital that I get out into those areas to meet the people and see first hand what’s happening there.“
