Talitha Cummins promotes physical activity to Rochedale students

Year of Physical Activity Ambassador Talitha Cummins from Channel Seven visited Rochedale State School today to talk to students and teachers about the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford and Member for Mansfield Phil Reeves were also on hand to support Talitha during her first official visit as a newly appointed Ambassador.

“As a Year of Physical Activity Ambassador, Ms Cummins is a role model who makes physical activity an important part of her daily life,” Mr Welford said.

“Physical activity is essential for good health and well-being and helps us to achieve in all parts of our lives, including in our studies and work.

“That’s why 2008 is the Year of Physical Activity for Queensland schools as part of the Smart Moves physical activity program.

“Talitha spoke to the students about how she includes physical activity in her daily life, and learned how the students are including physical activity in their lives at school.”

Mr Welford said the school was incorporating a number of physical activity programs into the curriculum as part of Smart Moves.

“For example, Year 4 students are working hard on the Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds program as part of their studies this year.

“This program involves students and teachers exploring how the body works and the need for a healthy lifestyle.

“Students in all year levels have also been participating in daily physical activity including games, cross-country and fitness running, a perceptual motor skills program and Prep physical education.”

Mr Reeves said a new school oval and a multipurpose court platform would be built at Rochedale State School with completion anticipated early in the 2009 school year.

“The new oval will improve sporting facilities at the school and support a continued focus on physical activity,” Mr Reeves said.

“The $900,000 project has been funded through Education Queensland’s 2008-09 Capital Works Program.

“Our Government is committed to ensuring all schools in Queensland have high quality, relevant facilities that serve the needs of students.”
