Noosa jobseekers get cooking
Noosa will soon be better prepared to meet the demands of its booming tourism industry as 12 enthusiastic young people graduate tomorrow with skills to enter work in the hospitality industry.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said Noosa Community Training Centre received $21,309 funding to train and deliver job preparation activities to the graduates under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.
“This group is one of four intakes to undergo accredited training in hospitality which has been funded an overall $71,030 by the Queensland State Government,” Mr Mickel said.
“The purpose of these projects is to get skilled people into employment, particularly with an aging population where we need all the people we can get participating in the workforce.
“Hospitality is a key industry contributing to the state’s economy and by providing capable workers we are helping to maintain its growth.”
Noosa Community Training Centre Manager Glenda Lane said in addition to vocational training participants also took part in exercises focused on job searching, computer operations, literacy and numeracy, personal development, communication and team work skills.
“Today’s graduates have just finished one week of full-time work experience amongst local hospitality venues including Tewantin RSL, Parc Food, Victory Hotel, Ricky’s River Bar and Restaurant and Tewantin Noosa Golf Club,” Ms Lane said.
“They were also given the opportunity to get some real life experience catering for functions with the local youth centre, The J at Noosa Junction.
“This was a valuable chance for the group to demonstrate the skills they have attained over the past 13 weeks while learning the ins and outs of the hospitality industry.”
The Smorgasboard of Skills graduation will take place at 1pm on Friday 20 June at the Noosa Community Training Centre at 26 Eenie Creek Road, Noosaville.
During 2008/09 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 15,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving assistance 71 per cent of participants are in employment or further training.
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
