Treasurer visits site of new Mackay Base Hospital

Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser has toured the Mackay Base Hospital after announcing funding to redevelop the facility in the 2008-09 budget.

Mr Fraser said $5.3 million would be spent this year on works necessary ahead of construction starting next year.

‘’This money is being allocated in advance of the sale of the Mackay airport. We aren’t waiting to start the ball rolling.

“This hospital will ensure families in the Mackay region will be able to access more services, instead of having to travel to larger centres for some treatment,’’ he said.

“As a former resident of north Queensland I know how important it is for the community to access vital health care.

“This project will make a huge difference to the lives of many sick and injured residents,’’ he said.

Mr Fraser said the Mackay Health Master Plan outlines sensible solutions that would see the hospital totally rebuilt at an approximate cost of more than $405 million.

The initial $5.3 million funding will go towards further work on drawing up plans, concept work and initial site work such as the construction of a plant room.

“Construction is expected to start by the end of 2009 and the project due for completion in 2012 or 2013.”

Mr Fraser said there had been record spending on health in this year’s budget.

The master plan for Mackay will see the hospital rebuilt in two stages.

The new, three-storey hospital will contain an increased number of operating theatres, a dedicated coronary care unit, new staff accommodation a larger dialysis unit and new emergency and outpatient developments.

“This project is essential for the Mackay region,’’ Mr Fraser said.

Mr Fraser said the new hospital was part of the Bligh government’s commitment to new health and hospital infrastructure, regional Queensland.
