The Honourable Rod Welford
Fifty-nine young Queenslanders have been selected to showcase their skills at the upcoming WorldSkills National Competition to be held in Sydney from 10 to 14July.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford congratulated the apprentices and trainees who will take part in the prestigious event.
“WorldSkills has 40 categories ranging from the traditional trades, such as carpentry and plumbing, to newer traineeships such as IT software applications and web design,” Mr Welford said.
“The competition is a unique way to compare standards in the industrial trades and service sectors across Australia and gives participants the opportunity to learn new skills in a competitive, but friendly environment.”
“It’s a great opportunity for Queensland apprentices and trainees to put their talent on display and test their metal against their peers,” he said.
“It also benefits employers because workers are encouraged to excel in their field and bring back higher level skills and knowledge to the workplace.”
“Those who perform well in the national event could also be selected for the International WorldSkills competition to be held in Canada in 2009.
“Last year, four Queenslanders made the Australian ‘Skillaroos’ team and competed in Japan in the international competition.
“I’m hopeful that we’ll have even more Queenslanders represented on the team after the national competition is held in July.”
Mr Welford said WorldSkills complimented the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which included strategies such as investing in skill centres of excellence and creating more trades training places to help reduce skill shortages in Queensland.
