Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson

Protecting landholders’ rights to compensation

Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said today that his Department had produced a range of material in relation to landholders' rights, including information sheeets, to help landholders in their dealings with mining and exploration companies.

Minister Wilson has also assured Queensland landholders of their right to compensation if their land is affected by a mining lease.

"A mining lease cannot be granted or renewed unless compensation has been agreed between the mine and landholders within the boundaries of the mining lease," Mr Wilson said.

"If compensation can’t be agreed upon, the Land Court has the power to determine the amount to be paid to the landholder,” Mr Wilson said.

"We are mindful of the rights of landholders and are doing everything we can to ensure their rights are protected,” he said.
