Moura: Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said today that miners who lost their lives in mining accidents in Moura and Kianga would be commemorated at a special Miners Memorial Day later this year.
In Moura for a regional community forum, Minister Wilson said the mining deaths were a sad part of Queensland’s collective history.
“And the history of workers, their struggle, and sadly the ultimate sacrifice of workers should never be forgotten,” Mr Wilson said.
On the 16 July, 1986, twelve miners lost their lives in an explosion at Moura No. 4 coal mine. Eleven miners died in an underground explosion at Moura No. 2 mine on the 7th August, 1994. In 1975, 13 miners were killed in an underground explosion at the Kianga No. 1 coal mine.
“These tragic events are recorded, not just in flickering black and white newsreels, but in the memories of mining communities today, because they’re mining people and they know what it’s like,” he said.
Miners Memorial Day will be held on the anniversary of the worst mining disaster in Queensland’s history. On the 19th September, 1921, 75 miners lost their lives in a coal dust explosion at Mount Mulligan in far north Queensland.
“On this day, we will pay tribute to all miners in all mines across the state.
“Mining has helped forge our strong economy. From the gold rush days of the 1800s, mining has become a multi billion dollar industry that is powering the state.
“And while we enjoy the benefits of the resources boom, we should reflect on how we got there and at what price – that’s what Miners Memorial Day is all about.
“On this day, we will remember the Moura and Kianga miners and we will remember the miners of Mount Mulligan, Box Flat and Collinsville, and all miners who have lost their lives since mining began in Queensland in the 1800s.
“Miners Memorial Day will shine a light on the most important side of mining – the safety of the men and women who work in Queensland’s mines,” he said.
A steering committee has been set up with representatives from industry and the unions to work in partnership with the State Government in organising the inaugural Miners Memorial Day.
